Running a marathon

After giving this a lot of thought, I decided I will run the marathon this year barring any injuries.

Lot of people have different opinions about running the marathon. Some (most actually) think that only a crazy person runs a marathon. Some of us think it is an awesome feeling. But to be honest, it definitely takes a lot of effort to run one.

I am reminded of the friends episode where Ross and Chandler (or is that Joey) make a list about the good things for Rachel and Julie so as to choose between them. I think my list ended up reminding me of the same thing. Here is my rough list

  1. Invest a lot of time training for the marathon.
  2. Miss out on doing a lot of things this summer – hiking, trekking, tennis, hanging out and so on
  3. Get chapped and bleed in lots of places – you name a place and it is a high probability that you are going to get chapped. This for some reason is more true for guys.
  4. Take ice baths (aaahhhh)
  5. Pay inordinate amount of money to get the privilege to participate in one (for example 110 dollars for the Chicago marathon.)
  6. No guarantees that I will lose weight (usually a pretty important thing for me)

  1. It is a marathon for god’s sake. I would be doing something not too many people will ever do.

Yup, after the reasoning, the decision is obvious isn’t it. I have decided to run the marathon – hopefully the one in Chicago. Now I have to decide if I am going to run to support a charity (ASHA) or just run. Currently I am inclined to just run but maybe that will change in a couple of weeks.

Anyway, I have been slowly increasing my running since I got back from my Europe trip. I currently am running a little more than 10 miles a week with a long run of 30 minutes. I hope to raise it up to 25 miles a week by the end of May when I will start training a little more seriously.

i guess i dont have to remind you but do it quick..the entries close soon. my vote is for asha..there are some requirements like the money you need to raise but folks have told me it’s worth it

I am seriously considering ASHA da. The only problem is that I am not very comfortable asking people for money – as you probably know by now :). That is the only thing that might work against it – I dont want to end up having to shell out all the money :). I am not feeling that generous.

Good luck on your upcoming marathon event. I would definitely register early to make sure your spot is secure and also because that is when they offer the lowest price. If you are worried about shelling out the money look into sponsors who are part of the event. The LiveStrong Foundation is part of the Music City marathon and if you raise $500 in donations they pay for you marathon entry. That is one way but you will have to check with the event coordinators. Good luck on completing your first marathon. It is a tough training program but when you cross that finish line it is will worth all the blisters and pain.
